Write up to 1000 words on "Why we research". Approach the prompt as you like and aim to be inspirational. If unsure, imagine a student or colleague asking you "Why is research important?", and putting this into words in a way you would be happy to be shared online. Add specifics where possible, it helps connect with the reader.

Who is it for?
Young adults looking to forge their own path in life. They are actively choosing what to stand for, consider a research career, and are seeking reference points.

What is it for?
Refocus self-narratives from the inward-out, asking why before how before what. Help realise there is no single story by exposing a diversity of whys.

What is in it for you?
We expect your primary motivation to be sharing your insight and experience to readers. Your essay will feature aside other inspirational figures and will comprise a short bio designed to raise awareness about your work.

How will we know it worked?
By monitoring subscribers to a newsletter and essays analytics1. A form for feedback and suggestions will give us a sense of what readers want.
